Contemplative Prayer - Thursdays at 5:30 pm in the Rectory Library

Contemplative Prayer at St. Saviour’s Parish: Each Thursday, from 5:30-6:30 pm, a group gathers in the Parish Library (in the Rectory Common at 41 Mt. Desert Street) to learn about and practice the art of centering prayer. We begin with listening to a 15-20 minute segment of Thomas Keating’s introduction to Centering Prayer. Keating uses scientific discoveries, psychological insights, spiritual wisdom from many traditions and Christian faith to appreciate the gift of contemplative prayer which has the capacity to open us to a rich interior life and to connect us with others and to all creation. Author of several books, including Intimacy with God and Open Mind, Open Heart, Keating is a Cistercian monk and founder of the Centering Prayer Movement. He resides at St. Benedict’s Monastery in Snowmass, Colorado. After listening, we share responses briefly, and then we sit together in silence for roughly thirty minutes. We welcome all points of view, and we each benefit from one another’s experiences.

Holy Thief, stealing away our false securities and idle vanity: awaken us from the dull sleep that clings to empty fear and vacant routine; unfold on us the time of crisis when love of truth floods a thirsty world; through Jesus Christ, the one who is to come. A Service for Remembering on Friday, December 10th at 5:00 PM in The Rectory Common Library.  During the period between Thanksgiving and Christmas, the wonder of child birth, the gathering of family and the miracle of child-like joy can touch us deeply and also hit a raw spot. For many of us, this is a hard time when we remember those who are not with us to celebrate. We are not alone; and unless we need to be, we do not have to be alone. All are invited to celebrate the Eucharist with the special intention of thanking God for the lives of loved ones and asking God to comfort those who are grieving and those whose children have died before them. Such losses change life forever. We seek a way to remember and to go forward. We have a need to embrace grief and hope. If you have lost a child or someone else, if you feel deep emptiness, I hope that you will find time to sit still and to be embraced by God’s care. Please come if you can, and pray for those who have died, for all who grieve and for those who have lost a child.  If you would like to help shape this service or take a role in leading a part of it, please call me, Jonathan Appleyard, 288-4215, and welcome our neighbors and friends.

The Emerging Church, continues Fridays at Noon until December 17 (except November 26 and December 10) in the Parish Library.  Reflection for 12/3 is: Technology, instant communication, diversity and globalization are just a few of the realities of our current culture. What influence does this culture have on the “church.” What possibilities does it create?

Note cards for sale! You will find a part of the selection of cards on the table in the Narthex and the full selection on the ordering table in the Rectory Common hallway during office hours on Tuesday to Friday from 8:30 am to 1:30 pm. You can sit, look at them all, fill out your order form and take it to Muffet who will be happy to get you your selections. Please make your check payable to St. Saviour’s Parish. Muffet will be happy to email the selection to you – contact her at StSaviour@roadrunner.com.

The First Light Society of the Diocese of Maine

In 2003 the Episcopal Diocese of Maine established the First Light Society for any who had included St. Saviour’s Parish, the Diocese of Maine or any other Episcopal ministry in their will or planned giving. Several members of the St. Saviour’s are included as early participants. If you have made such plans, please let Jonathan know so that Bishop Lane can acknowledge your foresight. If you would prefer to keep your plan confidential, but want to support the effort, please let the rector know your wish. He will pass on word of an anonymous pledge while withholding your name.

Let all who seek you rejoice in you and be glad. Psalm 40:17
